Overview
Star Citizen gives you the opportunity to expanse your carrier into different areas. You can do missions, or you can do sandbox activities to get the money for new ships and equipment.
Mission types:
Space / atmosphere combat - assassination, patrol, bounty
On foot combat - fly to bunkers or asteroids guarded by enemy ships
Currier - deliver small single packaged
Hauling - deliver multiple fright containers
Smuggling - same like currier and hauling but illegal wares
Ship refuelling - you need a MISC Starfarer or a MISC Starlight
Hand mining - mine with hand tools or small ground vehicles
Spacecraft mining - mine with ships like the Golem or Prospector
Scrap and ship salvaging - hand salvaging and with ships
Sandbox money making:
Trading - Trade wares between NPC stations
Salvaging - Sell the resources to NPC stations
Mining - Sell the resources to NPC stations or to players
Refining - Refine mined resources to sell them for a higher price
Crafting - Use high quality resources to craft especially strong items
Raiding - Raid Facilities for valuable equipment to sell it to players
Piracy - Steal other players wares and sell them to pirate NPC stations
Rescue - Fly to player rescue beacons, and try to help (it's a trap!)

The Fighter
If you choose the Aurora MK II as your starter ship, one way is to update your ship components. But beware since patch 4.8 you have to insure your installed components, so you need some UEC left after you bought the components:
Power Plant: Breton - Area 18 - Arcorp - 50 160 UEC
Coolers: 2 x Gelid - Area 18 - Arcorp - 2 x 28 800 UEC
Radar: Abetti - New Babbage - Microtech 13 600 UEC
Shields: 2 x 7SA 'Concord' - New Babbage - Microtech - 2 x 85 500 UEC
Quantum Drive: Colossus - New Babbage - Microtech - 35 910 UEC
With Patch 4.8 you should be able to buy the Aurora MK II DM Module which will give your ship eight size two rockets and one additional shield generator, so you have to buy a third 7SA 'Concord'. So you need 218 290 UEC.
And don't forget to insure your ship with the new installed components over the ASOP terminal!
I would recommend flying the ship with the standard equipment for as long as possible. That way, you'll be able to reclaim the ship for free, though it will take a little while.
With your starter package credits and the bonus code credits you have already 60 000 UEC, so how to get the rest? (If you have shortly created an account you can still enter the code STAR-JG9B-VR4M at the bottom on your profile sidebar on robertsspaceindustries.com)
When you opening your MobiGlas (F12) you can find under CONTRACTS -> MERCENARY some missions. Some are space combat missions, some are ground combat missions. I would recommend you to pick those with the lowest mission reward at the start. These are the easiest.
If you die, you will loose stored items in your bags. and if your ship is destroyed or you can not reach it anymore, you have to reclaim it on the ASOP terminal. But this process will take some time and can cost some UEC if you have insure some new installed components.
Instead of buying components, you could save up for a new ship. But that’s a bit tricky given the current insurance situation. Most combat ships have a mix of ballistic and laser weapons. I wouldn’t recommend that combination right now.
So there are two options: buy one of these ships, swap out the weapons, and then insure it. The other option is to buy only certain ships that can be flown “stock” meaning you don't have to pay the insurance premium.
These “stock” flyable ships are (in my opinion):
Talon: Light fighter for 3 210 480 UEC at Area18 - is not doing much damage
Sabre: Medium stealth fighter for 4 273 290 UEC at Lorvile - has not so good stealth components
Corsair: Expedition / Gunboat for 6 224 400 UEC at Lorvil - large, slow, tanky and a lot of firepower. This is not a fighter!
Guardian: Heavy fighter for 6 615 000 UEC at Area18 and Lorvile
Blade: Light fighter for 7 796 250 UEC at Area18 - glass cannon
